Jan 21, 2010 ...Some wines just stick in your mind. It's time to reflect on those 2009 standouts and list some favorites. Call the awards "The Buzzies" or "The Winos," or whatever you will. ...Favorite local red: Holly's Hill Vineyards 2006 El Dorado Patriarche. From one of our favorite tasting room visits of 2009 as well, this Rhone-style blend of mourvedre and syrah wowed us with its lovely mouth feel and bright cherry fruit. The judges at the California State Fair felt the same, giving this a "best of class" award. ...El Dorado County, about an hour from downtown Sacramento, is a bucolic, often beautiful area ripe for taking photos. Kodak moments aside, many of the wines up there are very good, with an emphasis on Rhone-style blends. The area also feels relatively undiscovered, which should fuel those with a thirst for adventure. To see what we mean, grab a glass and head outside the tasting room at Holly's Hill Vineyards. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Walnut Grove. Simply stunning...
